Growth of Micro-Mobility is Expected to be Higher than Car-Sharing and Ride-Hailing Services

Autonomy in micro-mobility is still a far-fetched concept; however, some technology companies, such as Marble, have been successful in deploying projects in the last-mile delivery market. Micro-mobility is a part of the global mobility-as-a-service market. The micro-mobility ecosystem is currently attracting a substantial sum of investments in the mobility service domain. Amount of traveling via micro-mobility more than doubled in 2018 in comparison to 2017. The growth rate in micro-mobility is currently higher than the car-sharing and ride-hailing services. This has pushed the major travel companies, engaging in ride-hailing initiatives, to re-strategize and integrate micro-mobility in their service portfolio.

The benefits of micro-mobility are based upon certain criteria which are further divided by power sources, i.e., gasoline and electric.

BIS Research Report on Micro Mobility Market

Gasoline-powered mode: Cost of device or vehicle is the average selling price of various modes such as a bike/two-wheeler or motorcycle with an IC engine. Ridesharing will include cars majorly with IC engines and the same for private cars. The infrastructure requirement, such as fuel pumps, roads, regulatory bodies, connectivity, and secondary support services (such as payment gateway), are supporting criteria for the smooth operation of a service. The analysis of various factors indicated cost saving when micro-mobility mode is compared with a private car. The benefit is calculated by considering the value difference between the lowest two from the segments. There are several other benefits offered by the gasoline-powered mode.

Electric-powered mode:  Ride-sharing will majorly include cars with an electric powertrain and the same for private vehicles/cars. The CO2 emission is considered per vehicle per mile in grams. The average value is based on the estimation of the Environment Protection Agency (EPA), which is extracted from per vehicle yearly emission data. The weight of the device is a significant factor, as it is directly proportional to the amount of energy that goes into the production and is required to drive the vehicle per mile. There are several other benefits offered by the electric-powered mode.

The mobility requirements and consumer needs are transforming drastically over the past decade. Mobility, as a service segment, is the parent segment of the micro-mobility market that has substantially revolutionized the way people travel and how logistics can transform to enable high-level of asset management.
